Abstract
Late wilt disease of maize, caused by Magnaporthiopsis maydis, is characterized by progressive wilting and vascular discoloration. The present study documented disease symptoms and confirmed the pathogenicity of the associated pathogen. Naturally infected plants showed initial yellowing and drying of lower leaves at flowering, followed by severe wilting, vascular and pith discoloration, and reddish-brown to yellowish streaks in the lower internodes. Pathogenicity was evaluated on 30-day-old susceptible maize hybrid CP828 using toothpick and syringe inoculation methods under greenhouse conditions. Initial symptoms appeared 15–20 days after inoculation, followed by progressive leaf drying, wilting and vascular browning, with complete plant death at 35–45 days. No symptoms developed in uninoculated controls. The pathogen was successfully re-isolated from symptomatic vascular tissues, and the re-isolates showed characteristics comparable to the original isolate. Reproduction of characteristic symptoms and successful re-isolation confirmed the pathogenicity of M. maydis and fulfilled Koch’s postulates.
