Effect of auxin type, concentration and planting season on rooting and growth attributes of Diospyros lotus L. branch cuttings

Abstract
Diospyros lotus L. (date-plum), an important persimmon rootstock species valued for its adaptability and drought tolerance, is difficult to propagate vegetatively because of poor and inconsistent rooting of stem cuttings. A field experiment was conducted at the nursery of the Division of Silviculture & Agroforestry, SKUAST-Jammu, to evaluate the effect of two auxins – indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), each at 25, 50 and 100 ppm applied through 24-hour soaking, along with an untreated control – on the sprouting, rooting and growth of branch cuttings planted during the spring and rainy seasons. The experiment followed a two-factor factorial Completely Randomized Design with fourteen treatment combinations, each replicated thrice. IBA at 100 ppm (H₃) recorded the highest number of leaves per cutting (14.51) and dry root biomass (0.15 g), while IBA at 50 ppm (H₂) gave a statistically comparable, and the highest, number of shoots (3.51); NAA and the untreated control performed poorly across all parameters. Cuttings planted in spring consistently outperformed those planted in the rainy season for shoot number, leaf number, dry root biomass and leaf area. The hormone × season interaction was significant for shoot number and dry root biomass, with the combination of IBA at 100 ppm with spring planting (T₃) giving the best overall rooting response (0.16 g dry root biomass), closely followed by IBA at 50 ppm with spring planting (T₂, 0.15 g). The results indicate that treating branch cuttings of D. lotus with IBA at 100 ppm and planting them in spring is the most effective and practically feasible approach for its vegetative propagation on a nursery scale.
