Assessment of air quality trends and pollution hotspots in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra using Geospatial Techniques

Abstract
Atmospheric pollution is a major problem, amplified
by faster urbanizing and industrial development. This trend is particularly
witnessed in the State of Maharashtra, India, with focus on the Vidarbha
region. The analysis for the years 2023 and 2024 uses the Inverse Distance
Weighting (IDW) technique of analysis through GIS mapping analysis. The
analysis of the data indicates a high variation in concentrations of air
pollutants over the Vidarbha region. The observations reveal a substantial rise
in the concentration of particulate matters in the year 2024, from 8-52 µg/m³
to 9-109 µg/m³ for PM₂.₅ and from 30-115 µg/m³ to 26-185 µg/m³ for PM₁₀. The
concentrations of SO₂ decreased from 5-15 µg/m³ to 5-10 µg/m³, and in NO₂ from
9-34 µg/m³ to 8-30 µg/m³. Both Nagpur and Chandrapur have turned out to be
major pollution points for all parameters studied. This study proves the
capability of GIS-based spatial modeling in the effective management of air
quality in a city and reinforces the need for specific control measures in the
polluted areas of the Vidarbha region.
