The role of keystone species in ecosystem stability and function
Authors
Chinedu A Adewale
Abstract
Keystone species play a critical role in maintaining the structure,
stability, and functionality of ecosystems. These species have a
disproportionately large impact on their environment relative to their
abundance. This review paper explores the concept of keystone species, their
ecological roles, and the mechanisms through which they influence ecosystem
dynamics. It also discusses case studies of keystone species in various
ecosystems, the consequences of their removal, and the implications for
conservation and ecosystem management.
